The New Limited-Edition Ranger Thunder will make you grab your raincoat and prepare for a storm because Ford has decided to expand their truck range with the all New Limited-Edition Ranger Thunder! But what makes this model unique from other Ranger models? Let’s compare the Thunder to Ford’s existing line-up to answer this question.
Off the bat we know that this model is special because only limited stock of the New Limited-Edition Ranger Thunder is manufactured and available for purchase. Due to this limited availability, potential owners will have to jump at the chance to get their hands on this powerful vehicle!Let’s start off by comparing the performance of the Thunder, Wildtrak and Raptor models. Under the hood, all three vehicles have a 2.0L Bi-Turbo 4-Cylinder Diesel Engine and drive via a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Furthermore, the Thunder and the Wildtrak both have a fuel consumption of 7.8L/100km, while the Raptor uses 8.3L/100km. The Raptor emits 220g of CO2 per km, while the Wildtrak and Thunder both emit 207g of CO2 per km The Raptor is known for its ultra-durable and larger frame, so it consumes slightly more fuel than the Wildtrak and Thunder models.
The maximum power for all the models is 157Nm @ 3750rpm and all three of these vehicles have a maximum Torque of 500Nm @ 1500-2000rpm. The Thunder also showcases a 210-horsepower diesel engine like the Raptor model.
Both the Raptor and the New Limited-Edition Ranger Thunder utilises 4-wheel drive as standard, while the Wildtrak also has a 4X2 option. All three vehicles come with a double cab configuration as standard. The double cab configuration offers more space for work and play. The only considerable difference is the size of the Raptor model.
The Raptor is 4mm longer and 51mm wider than the Wildtrak model. The Raptor’s ground clearance also increased from the Wildtrak’s 230mm to 283mm. The Thunder’s ground clearance is between the Raptor and Wildtrak with a clearance of 237mm.
Performance-wise it is clear that the Thunder slots in just above the Wildtrak and below the Raptor. So, what really makes the Thunder unique and worth consideration? Let’s look at the cosmetic and technological features of the Thunder.
Even though it is based on the Wildtrak, the Thunder showcases some impressive standard features such as exclusive 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, bold red highlights on the exterior and 3-dimensional badges that accentuates the matte-black Thunder logos displayed on the exterior of the vehicle’s body.
While the Ford Ranger Wildtrak offers a leather-seat combination of leather and high-quality durable materials, the Thunder and the Raptor models have 100% leather seating.
It is also evident that each model has a different interior colour scheme. The Wildtrak is known for its vibrant orange and black spacious seating with orange stitching, while the Raptor has sleek black, blue and grey body-contoured sport seats with suede inserts. The Thunder, on the other hand, has distinctive Ebony leather seats with Thunder embroidery and matching stitching in bold red. This stitching is also visible on the steering wheel, the cabin and the instrument panel.
When it comes to technological features all three cars have Ford SYNC*3 with voice activation, 2X USB ports, 6 speakers, rear-view cameras, lane keeping aid, and 8” colour screens, just to name a few! However, the Thunder also has 2 X 4.2” TFT screens in cluster and navigation (Ford.co.za, 2020) The Thunder’s steering wheel also provides newly designed multi-functional buttons and rear floor storage that improves your overall driving experience. This impressive truck also has a forward collision warning system that allows the vehicle to brake on its own in case of an emergency.
The Thunder definitely has some impressive and bold exterior and interior features, but does the price reflect the value of the vehicle? With an estimated cost of R800 000, the Thunder once again comes in between the Wildtrak (R753 600) and the Raptor (R875 000).
As previously stated, the performance and features of the Thunder puts it in between the Wildtrak and Raptor models, and its price reflects that nicely. With its exclusive features this limited-edition model is a great option for all Ranger lovers!
The Ford Ranger Thunder was made to stand out with its dramatic colour-contrasting exterior and unique interior specifications. It delivers an assertive and bold design without compromising the powerful Thunder’s practicality.
The Thunder is a limited-edition vehicle that you do not want to miss out on! But don’t take our word for it, go test drive one today!

Ford Takes Two Class Victories on Inaugural WesBank Fuel Economy Tour
· Ford Ranger 2.0 Single Turbo XLT Double Cab, with advanced 10-speed automatic, claims victory in highly competitive pickup segment with overall consumption of 6.81 l/100km
· Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost wins its class on 5.21 l/100km
· Runner-up position for Ford Kuga 1.5 TDCi in turbodiesel compact SUV class after recording impressive 5.38 l/100km
· WesBank Fuel Economy Tour route covered 2435km over five days, travelling from Johannesburg through Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth and George to Cape Town
Ford lives up to 'Go Further' brand promise and was translated into tangible results last week after the Ford Ranger and Ford Fiesta traveled further on less fuel and emerged as the most fuel-efficient vehicles in their respective segments during the inaugural WesBank Fuel Economy Tour in partnership with FNB. The Ford Kuga was a close second in the turbo diesel compact SUV segment.
The event featured 40 entries from 12 manufacturers across various classes, which ensured that the fuel economy of direct competitors was tested in real-world driving conditions.
The Ford Ranger, powered by the all-new 2.0 Single Turbo engine matched to the advanced, 10-speed automatic transmission, proved its status as the most economical pickup in its segment over widely varied and challenging terrain all driven at normal everyday speeds. The Ranger recorded an exceptional average fuel consumption of 6.8179 l/100km.
"The performance of the New Ranger was simply remarkable," Colin Mileman said at the prize-giving ceremony in Cape Town. "The all-new 2.0 Single Turbo is an outstanding engine, giving us all the power and torque we needed to conquer the steep uphill’s, while just sipping fuel."
"The results from the WesBank Fuel Economy Tour provide invaluable fuel consumption data for consumers to compare vehicles in the respective segments. It also demonstrates the economy that can be achieved when the vehicles are driven in the most fuel-efficient manner," Mileman added.
In the compact car segment, the 1.0 EcoBoost engine of the Ford Fiesta proved why it is a multiple International Engine of the Year winner. The Ford Fiesta competed in the class for turbocharged petrol engines below 1100cc and took the class win with an average consumption of just 5.21 l/100km.
"I was mightily impressed by the Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost's thrifty drinking habits over the past week's sojourn, allowing us to win our class and finish ninth overall out of 40 participants in the maiden WesBank Fuel Economy Tour," Matebese said. "This event is a great marketing tool for manufacturers."
In the rapidly-growing compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment, the Ford Kuga 1.5 TDCi recorded an impressive average consumption of 5.38 l/100km.
"I knew the Kuga 1.5 TDCi was good, but to achieve that fuel economy on the challenging roads we drove, while having to maintain the realistic speeds and stay within the allocated times for each section, was amazing," Adams stated.

The Ford Ranger is the perfect vehicle to fit any lifestyle
The Ford Ranger is not only a phenomenal workhorse but it has also become a lifestyle vehicle of choice for families too.
With boosted levels of comfort, refinement, safety, technology and outright performance, Ranger’s move to the mainstream has helped ignite our sense for adventure with a versatile vehicle primed for action.
Here are five ways the Ranger makes transitioning from a family sedan to a bakkie that much smoother
It’s safe
The Ford Ranger comes pre-loaded with an exceptional safety package that combines traditional safety features with innovative, state-of-the-art driver assist technologies on the range-topping Wildtrak derivatives.
The Ford Ranger also comes with up to seven airbags on the Double Cab XLT and Wildtrak models, along with a reinforced safety cell to ensure every journey is a safe one. Ranger’s elevated driving position and adjustable seats also give drivers a better view of the road ahead than they may otherwise get when driving a family car.
It’s comfortable
Inside the Ford Ranger, the priority is space, comfort and functionality. With plenty of head and leg
room in the back, the Ranger can comfortably fit a family of five for a weekend getaway.
The Ford Ranger not only feels like a luxury vehicle, but it drives like one too. Thanks to a high-strength steel chassis and an upgraded suspension system, the Ranger’s smooth and quiet on-road manners make the long drive a pleasant experience.
It’s easy to drive
People fall in love with the Ranger because it is so easy to drive. The electric power-assisted steering is nicely weighted, and the commanding driving position guarantees that the view ahead is clear and uncluttered.
At over five metres long and almost two metres wide, you may think the Ranger would be difficult to thread into a parking space, but its integrated rear-view camera displays virtual lines to help you park into the smallest of spaces. The camera activates automatically when you select reverse gear.
It goes everywhere
With an electronic shift-on-the-fly four-wheel-drive system, impressive front and rear clearance angles and an electronic diff lock, Ranger’s go-anywhere ability is truly exceptional. With Hill Launch Assist that ensures smooth pull-offs on even the steepest gradients, and an impressive wading depth of 800mm, means there’s very little that stands between you and your destination.
The Ford Ranger will not only get you to where you want to go, but it’ll help carry your gear there too. The load compartment can take up to 1.2 tons of gear and equipment, while Ranger’s maximum towing capacity of up to 3.5 tons means you can pack everything you need for the long haul.
It’s smart
Range-topping Ranger models come standard with the kind of technology you’ll find in luxury cars. Adaptive Cruise Control monitors the road and traffic ahead and adjusts your cruising speed accordingly. Built-in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity guarantees that you have access to your favourite smartphone apps too, whether it’s listening to music, podcasts or audiobooks, or using other innovative features such as Waze and Google Maps.

As much as that may be true, the front grille of a vehicle has a greater purpose than the ones mentioned above. The front grille of the vehicle was originally created to allow air flow, to cool down the engine and the radiator.
Over the years Ford has transformed the function of the grille by using what they call” Active Grille Shutters” on most of the vehicles. This allows for the shutters on the grille to open and close automatically to reduce aerodynamic drag whilst ensuring cooling to the engine. The active grille shutters also help to improve fuel efficiency. As if the Eco boost function was not amazing, Ford always finds a way to make your driving experience an absolute pleasure.
Ford strives to carry this design of the active grille shutters in all their recent models, and at
