Active Ford Grille Shutters
The front grille is one of the simplest things most of us ignore on a vehicle. Yes the front grille, ever wondered why it’s shaped in a certain way and what its function is exactly. Well many can come up with a lot of explanations like, “without it you can see the entire engine” or “it’s used to cover all the engine components as a protective feature”
As much as that may be true, the front grille of a vehicle has a greater purpose than the ones mentioned above. The front grille of the vehicle was originally created to allow air flow, to cool down the engine and the radiator.
Over the years Ford has transformed the function of the grille by using what they call” Active Grille Shutters” on most of the vehicles. This allows for the shutters on the grille to open and close automatically to reduce aerodynamic drag whilst ensuring cooling to the engine. The active grille shutters also help to improve fuel efficiency. As if the Eco boost function was not amazing, Ford always finds a way to make your driving experience an absolute pleasure.
Ford strives to carry this design of the active grille shutters in all their recent models, and at CMH Kempster Ford Hatfield, we love it and are very confident that this is a feature you will also love.

Ford Takes Two Class Victories on Inaugural WesBank Fuel Economy Tour
· Ford Ranger 2.0 Single Turbo XLT Double Cab, with advanced 10-speed automatic, claims victory in highly competitive pickup segment with overall consumption of 6.81 l/100km
· Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost wins its class on 5.21 l/100km
· Runner-up position for Ford Kuga 1.5 TDCi in turbodiesel compact SUV class after recording impressive 5.38 l/100km
· WesBank Fuel Economy Tour route covered 2435km over five days, travelling from Johannesburg through Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth and George to Cape Town
Ford lives up to ‘Go Further’ brand promise and was translated into tangible results last week after the Ford Ranger and Ford Fiesta traveled further on less fuel and emerged as the most fuel-efficient vehicles in their respective segments during the inaugural WesBank Fuel Economy Tour in partnership with FNB. The Ford Kuga was a close second in the turbo diesel compact SUV segment.
The event featured 40 entries from 12 manufacturers across various classes, which ensured that the fuel economy of direct competitors was tested in real-world driving conditions.
The Ford Ranger, powered by the all-new 2.0 Single Turbo engine matched to the advanced, 10-speed automatic transmission, proved its status as the most economical pickup in its segment over widely varied and challenging terrain all driven at normal everyday speeds. The Ranger recorded an exceptional average fuel consumption of 6.8179 l/100km.
“The performance of the New Ranger was simply remarkable,” Colin Mileman said at the prize-giving ceremony in Cape Town. “The all-new 2.0 Single Turbo is an outstanding engine, giving us all the power and torque we needed to conquer the steep uphill’s, while just sipping fuel.”
“The results from the WesBank Fuel Economy Tour provide invaluable fuel consumption data for consumers to compare vehicles in the respective segments. It also demonstrates the economy that can be achieved when the vehicles are driven in the most fuel-efficient manner,” Mileman added.
In the compact car segment, the 1.0 EcoBoost engine of the Ford Fiesta proved why it is a multiple International Engine of the Year winner. The Ford Fiesta competed in the class for turbocharged petrol engines below 1100cc and took the class win with an average consumption of just 5.21 l/100km.
“I was mightily impressed by the Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost’s thrifty drinking habits over the past week’s sojourn, allowing us to win our class and finish ninth overall out of 40 participants in the maiden WesBank Fuel Economy Tour,” Matebese said. “This event is a great marketing tool for manufacturers.”
In the rapidly-growing compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment, the Ford Kuga 1.5 TDCi recorded an impressive average consumption of 5.38 l/100km.
“I knew the Kuga 1.5 TDCi was good, but to achieve that fuel economy on the challenging roads we drove, while having to maintain the realistic speeds and stay within the allocated times for each section, was amazing,” Adams stated.
At CMH Kempster Ford Randburg not only do we strive to give you the best value for money, but we also look after your pocket with our products great fuel economy.

CMH Kempster Ford Pretoria is Going Green saving the world. As a dealership they are concerned about the scarcity of water in our country, for the past years we received less percentage of rain and that has economically cost us a lot, especially in the farming sector. Things will be very expensive especially food and automatically it will affect our petrol price, as a nation we have to come up with solution as to how can we save water, even our children must be taught how to preserve water. When we teach our children we teach the whole world and secure a better tomorrow.
Here are some of the things we do in order to stop wasting water – We have regular maintenance to check pipe leaks, check toilet leaks, use buckets to wash our vehicles, close all the taps tightly after use and we regularly use brooms to clean the drive ways
We, at CMH Kempster Ford Pretoria have realized that in order to fit in to the ever evolving and improving world we need to go green, slowly but surely. Our Dealer Principal expressed his passion in not being a part of the unnatural Global Warming, by conducting research and obtaining even more Eco-friendly vehicle stock as well as other products we can use to minimize our environmental demise.
In preserving the water (being our main life source), we at CMH Kempster Ford Pretoria also are making an effort in learning new ways to utilize bio-degradable products as well as save on electricity and energy. For about two weeks every summer between 1914 and 1924, a group of friends who called themselves the Four Vagabonds would climb into their Model Ts and hit the open road, travelling to some of the United States’ most scenic areas, stopping off and setting up overnight camps along the way.
But these weren’t your average Americans. They were none other than Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and John Burroughs. And the motorcade of up to 50 vehicles, which transported the celebrity Vagabonds, sometimes their wives, their household staff, and all the equipment they could possibly need for a comfortable holiday, was captured by Ford Motor Company photographers.
These high profile ‘glamping’ adventures undertaken by pre-eminent members of society fired public imagination. And the phenomenon of road tripping as an affordable way for ordinary families to satisfy their wanderlust soon spread to other parts of the world, including South Africa.
With almost 750,000km of roads criss-crossing the country – the tenth largest road network globally according to the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL), and by far the largest on the continent – it’s no wonder road tripping has become such a popular way for generations of South Africans to vacation.
Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa believes that the four pioneers of the original American road trip would whole-heartedly approve of the following tips for modern motorists wanting to get the most out of their own family road trips today.
Burroughs
As a naturalist and nature essayist, active in the US conservation movement, John Burroughs would advise you to use the unique opportunity of a road trip to discover and explore places of natural beauty, as a chance to learn more about the geological and cultural history of places you haven’t been before.
Whilst planning your route, look up the tourist attractions you’ll be passing along the way and incorporate the most appealing ones into your itinerary. Many of the newly constructed hotels of yesteryear are still in business as historic B&B tourism destinations today, and breaking up long trips into smaller chunks – with one or two overnight stays en route to your destination, interspersed with some sightseeing – not only reduces driving fatigue and back seat boredom, but makes for a much more enjoyable and memorable holiday.
The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) recommends reserving overnight accommodation in advance, especially during peak travel periods like Easter.
Firestone
As the founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, one of the first global makers of automobile tyres, Harvey Firestone would advise you to have your car’s wheel balancing and alignment checked before heading off, to ensure a smooth and safe trip, and not to forget to check the condition of your spare tyre too. Punctures happen to the best of us, at the worst of times. Just remember, spare tyres aren’t designed for long distances or high speeds, so once you have replaced a punctured tyre with the spare, you need to visit a tyre technician to fix or replace the original tyre as soon as possible.
You should only do a final tyre pressure check once your car is fully loaded, and when the tyres are still cool. The optimal tyre pressures, which you’ll find printed on a sticker inside your driver’s door, will help improve vehicle safety and maintain fuel efficiency.
Edison
A world renowned inventor whose name is synonymous with the electric light bulb, Thomas Edison was also the self-appointed navigator on the Vagabonds’ adventures, with nothing but a compass and a handful of atlases to guide the motorcade!
His advice to the modern day road tripper would be to familiarise yourself with all the marvellous tech features of your car, and take full advantage of navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze, accessed either on your smartphone or your car’s built-in infotainment system, like Ford’s cutting edge SYNC 3 *. For parents travelling with small kids, a visual display showing estimated travel and arrival time could even be the silver bullet you’ve been searching for to silence the age-old “Are we there yet?” chorus from the back seat.
Ford
And last but certainly not least, captain of industry, business magnate, and founder of the Ford Motor Company himself, Henry Ford would advise you to make sure your car is in tip-top shape before hitting the open road. Be sure to take it in for a thorough inspection at your local dealership, where they will check all the necessary parts for damage and replace them if necessary, so your car can perform at maximum efficiency.
Also visit the AA’s website for a list of Toll Fees and Toll Plaza Locations, as well as a current Road Conditions Report, which gives you a heads up on any road works that may be taking place, which could result in detours or delays to your journey.

One of the most appealing characteristics about the Fiesta is how it integrates small car fun into a large car sophistication, this holds true from the ride and handling experience of a Ford Fiesta. It may be a hatchback, but the Fiesta’s ability to create fun vibe during the most mundane journey is most endearing.
